ANTISKID Surfacing

POSSEHL ANTISKID® Surface Treatment is the proven solution for operational safety during take-off and landing.

The POSSEHL ANTISKID® is also known under the definitions "Porous Friction Coating (PFC)", "Surface Dressing of Asphalt", "Porous Pavement", "Chip Seal" or "Porous Friction Course". POSSEHL ANTISKID® for airports runways - a special surface treatment, whose high-tech surface sets the highest standard for safety during take-off and landing. POSSEHL ANTISKID® serves also as a reliable and lasting protection of the runway pavement surfaces and provides thus an optimal preservation of the base course.

The POSSEHL ANTISKID® Surface Treatment has a lifespan of approx. 8 to 15 years and longer. Since 1956 it has been applied on more than 130 runways at national and international airports and proven itself, technically and economically, during this time, as excellent protective high-grip surfacing system.

These are the most important characteristics of the POSSEHL ANTISKID® Surfacing:

• High friction coefficient µ > 0.74 on new runways and high-speed exit taxiways when wet (with a 1 mm water film and 95 km/h using a SAAB friction tester)
• Reduced aquaplaning danger through improved drainage of the water under the tires due to the pronounced macro textureof the surfacing; considerabely higher effective drainage capacity in comparison with grooving, retaining the same high friction over the entire surface.
• Local penetration of the water film through pronounced micro texture provides direct contact between the tires and the pavement surface.
• Fulfills the requirements of ICAO, Annex 14, regarding the friction coefficients
• Fulfills the requirements of JAR-OPS 1 (wet runways may be classified as dry) the operation of the runway can be maintained.
• Resistance against aircraft fuel, chemical de-icing agents, heat and jet engine exhaust streams.
• Savings on de-icing material of up to 80% are possible.
• Minimized FOD danger, because only specially graded aggregate with a maximum aggregate size of 3.5 mm (runway safety chippings) is used.
• Positive long-term experience in operational flight safety since 1956 on over 23 million square meters of ANTISKID. Fields of application are runways and high-speed exit taxiways on asphalt and concrete pavement.

The new International Runway Friction Index IRFI will, according to NASA, soon be used as the standard criterion for the comparison of friction measurements on aircraft-use pavements. In direct comparison to other surfacings or treated surfaces, POSSEHL ANTISKID® stands worldwide in first place with an IRFI value of µ = 0.84, in regards both to the depth of the surface texture, determined by various measurement processes, as to the friction coefficient value.
