Concrete repair – railway viaduct „Im Schloss“

Chipped concrete, hollow patches in the wall, damaged joints running through the masonry, partially exposed reinforcement and graffiti on the vault – the ‘Im Schloss’ railway underpass in Kreuztal-Littfeld was clearly showing its age.  To ensure the preservation and long-term safety of the underpass, a comprehensive refurbishment of the portal, side walls and vaulted sections was required.

From 11 May to 8 July 2026, our team did everything in their power to restore the ‘Im Schloss’ railway underpass to good working order.

Thorough preparation

First of all, our team set up the construction site properly and safely. We then began the actual preparations for the repair work. To this end, our team inspected all the damaged areas and removed loose concrete fragments and material that was no longer load-bearing. Cracks, open joints and voids were gradually exposed so that we could assess the full extent of the damage. The exposed reinforcement was carefully cleaned and supplemented where necessary.

Reprofiling and Coating

In the next stage, the missing sections of concrete were rebuilt. Using precisely fitted formwork, the damaged areas were filled with mineral-based concrete substitute and shotcrete. This restored the railway viaduct to its original shape and provided permanent protection for the exposed reinforcement.

In addition, loose portal coverings and individual sections of the vault and masonry were stabilised and repointed. This eliminated weak spots and permanently prevented the ingress of moisture.

Once the surfaces had been carefully smoothed and finely finished, the repaired areas were also treated with a water-repellent coating. This provides long-term protection for the concrete against the elements and moisture ingress. The railings at the north and south portals were also cleaned, prepared and recoated.

Lasting protection for the future

After around two months, the repairs to the railway underpass were completed. Where previously chipped concrete, open joints and exposed reinforcement had characterised the scene, the railway underpass is now intact once again and safe for traffic for years to come.
