Isentalautobahn – Refurbishment of the concrete road surface

When cracks form in the concrete carriageway on a motorway, prompt and, above all, precise repair work is required. This was also the case on the Isental motorway near the Dorfen junction in Bavaria. For four weeks, our team was at work on the A94 to repair damage to the concrete carriageway, replace defective joints and create new joints between the individual concrete slabs.

Why concrete carriageways need to be repaired

Unlike tarmac roads, concrete carriageways consist of individual slabs. These expand or contract depending on temperature and weather conditions. To absorb these movements in a controlled manner, joints are specifically incorporated into the carriageway.

Nevertheless, fine cracks can form over time, leading to spalling and flaking at the edges of the slabs. Regular maintenance is required to repair this damage and prevent further damage.

Refurbishment of the A94 motorway

The refurbishment of a concrete road surface requires precision and experience. On the A94, our team therefore first completely removed the damaged sections and thoroughly cleaned them by hand. Around 67 tonnes of new EP mortar were then applied. New joints were also created to ensure that movement of the slabs can continue to be absorbed in a controlled manner in future.

However, traffic was not to be unduly disrupted throughout the construction period. The work was therefore carried out whilst closing one carriageway in each direction. After around four weeks, including weekends, the refurbishment work was completed on schedule and the carriageway was fully reopened to traffic.

BAB 94 – Isentalautobahn

The Isentalautobahn, officially the A94 federal motorway (BAB 94), is a construction project with a long history. As early as the 1920s, there were plans to link Munich and Passau, thereby strengthens the south-east Bavarian region, the surrounding industrial centres and the spa triangle in the Inn and Rott valleys. Later, the project was repeatedly discussed, postponed and revised.

Today, the A94 spans around 150 km between Munich and Pocking, with plans to gradually expand and maintain the existing sections.
